Natural Female Viagra Best and Worst Herbs and Alternatives
It’s tough to get excited about sex after working all day long and getting kids to soccer, ballet, and then through their homework. Then there’s the dishwasher that needs to be loaded, and a stack of bills waiting. Even if there were a Viagra-equivalent little blue pill for women to take, it’s hard to imagine how well it would actually work. And would it be safe?
If you’re like most women, you’re not willing to simply take some pharmaceutical company’s word for the safety or effectiveness of their latest drug. You do your research – because your health is important, and lots of people depend on you.
So what libido-boosting alternatives are there for women like you? Is one remedy better than another? Here’s a quick review of some of the currently popular “natural female Viagra” solutions. Many have proved disappointing, but there is at least one that’s showing some promise…
1. Black (NOT Blue) Cohosh
Even though it doesn’t get a highly-favorable review on WebMD, of all the libido-boosting herbs currently in use black cohosh is probably the most popular.
Having fallen out of favor for a while, this American wildflower (related to the buttercup) is once again being considered as an herbal antidote for hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and other menopausal symptoms. It has even been recommended as an alternative to standard hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which can sometimes produce unwanted side effects.
Typically it takes 2 months of taking the herb to experience beneficial results, but because it’s fairly strong, most doctors do not recommend using it for more than 6 months at a time. It’s also not safe for pregnant or nursing women, women who have (or have had) breast or uterine cancer, endometriosis, liver disease, seizure disorders, or allergies to aspirin. Whew.
2. Borage Seed Oil
This oil contains gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which the body converts to a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) when you take it internally. Complicating matters, however, is the presence in borage oil of other fatty acids that may interfere with GLA absorption. In addition, borage seed oil may cause stomach upset.
3. Evening Primrose Oil
This healing oil have GLAs like borage seed oil, above, and it is known to help relieve the discomfort of premenstrual syndrome when taken internally. Unfortunately, there simply isn’t any data to support the long-term use of evening primrose oil, even though it’s been widely used for about two decades now.
4. Dong Quai / Angelica
This herb has been used for centuries as a tonic for the female reproductive system. Some experts claim that dong quai’s powers should be attributed to its phytoestrogens. It can be used to help address hot flashes and night sweats, although it must be taken for up to two months before you notice any changes, and the potential side effects include diarrhea (dong quai is a mild laxative) and sun sensitivity.
In addition, there are several types – if you’re testing it out, be sure to get the correct kind! In addition, it’s mostly being found to be effective in mixes with other natural herbs, which can make choosing the best combination a challenge.
5. Vitamin C and Vitamin E
We mostly know vitamin C as the “orange juice” vitamin, and it’s definitely helpful in boosting the immune system and preventing scurvy. And vitamin E is widely acknowledged to promote healing and reduce scars. But once again, there are no sources for the support of either of these otherwise-helpful vitamins as natural or herbal Viagra for women.
Kacip Fatimah: A Possible Alternative?
For generations, Malay women have used this natural herbal remedy for the firming and toning of abdominal muscles after childbirth, the easing of menstrual pain and cramping, and increasing the female libido.
Pharmacological studies are now being proposed to help determine exactly how this remedy works, but the Malaysian Herbal Medicine Research Centre has produced studies that suggest kacip fatima works by producing small amounts of free testosterone, which not only boosts sex drive in men, but also works the same way in women.
Keep an eye out on this very promising new herbal remedy for supporting feminine reproductive healthy and increasing women’s sex drive. It may be just what you’re looking for!
